Physical Resurrection According to Mulla Sadra and Allama Tabatabai: A Comparative and Analytical Study
Abstract
Various theories concerning the nature of human resurrection (maʿād) have been proposed throughout history. One of its most important aspects is bodily resurrection, the demonstration of which has remained a major challenge for philosophers and theologians. Prior to Mullā Ṣadrā, no philosopher had established bodily resurrection through demonstrative rational proof. Relying on his philosophical innovations and foundational principles, Mullā Ṣadrā attempted to prove bodily resurrection using both rational and scriptural arguments.
In contrast, ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabāʾī, through his method of verse-by-verse Qur’anic exegesis, explained issues related to bodily resurrection. Both philosophers affirmed the true identity of the human being and distinguished between worldly and otherworldly matter, thereby addressing key doubts. They held that the elemental worldly body disintegrates, while another body appropriate to the hereafter accompanies the soul.
Compared to ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabāʾī, Mullā Ṣadrā relied more extensively on philosophical reasoning and presented his views more explicitly. Meanwhile, ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabāʾī, considering the intellectual capacity of his audience, avoided detailed demonstration of certain issues, resulting in a more concise treatment of the modality of resurrection.
